Kurzinhalt, Form, Widmung

The undated preface (51 pages) is Camerarius’ treatise on demonology and witch lore. In it, he explains his conversion from disbelief to belief in harmful magic, sexual intercourse between humans and demons, and the witches' sabbat. Written in late 1565 (Fontaine 2017), the treatise takes the form of a letter to Adrian Albinus. In May of that year, Albinus had presided over a series of mass witch trials in Perleberg, and while visiting Camerarius in Leipzig, told him about them. After his departure, Camerarius read Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola’s 1523 demonological dialogue "Strix" ("The Witch"; Camerarius wrongly calls it "De Strigibus"). It prompted him to scour classical - but not Christian - literature for evidence of demons, ghosts, nightmares, madness, visions, magic cures, and witches. The vast majority of the preface (50 pages) is filled with his many citations of classical authors on these subjects, and they convince Camerarius that witches are real, that they celebrate orgies, that they have sexual intercourse with demons, and that these facts were known to ancient authorities. Camerarius includes one undated anecdote from his boyhood (puer).
For context and analysis of the whole letter, see Fontaine 2017.
